Hospice is care type philosophy, it’s goal is a palliation of terminal patients from symptoms of their disease or degradation. All though the concept of hospice has been around since the 11th century. The origins of hospice care begin at St.Christophers Hospice in London in 1967. This was the first place which used and coined the term “Hospice”. Hospice is a specialized field of care that offers support, comfort and compassion for those in their last days. Hospice relies on the care providers to allow guests to continue to live in a comfortable and loving environment before passing.
It is the intent of those involved with in the hospice facility to manage each guest individually to give them the greatest quality of life, and find harmony with dignity, while feeling the support of their family and loved ones. In some cases the family must make hard decisions. Care is provided around the clock for each guest and the family is notified immediately during any consequential event with their family member. In many cases a family member will volunteer to be the primary care giver in a facility or nursing home looking after their loved one in their final days.
Moving your loved one to hospice is a decision your family makes with your health care provider. In many cases the families will resist hospice because they feel that it means “giving up” however, if you family member begins to get better, over come the illness, or cancer goes into remission, he or she can immediately be take off hospice. Hospice was born out of the hope for quality of life being restful, comforting and surrounded by people that care about you, so that your final days can be ones of peace and joy.
